DHL recently introduced brand-new flights to expand the company’s air freight capacity between Asia and Europe. These new routes boost reliability, connectivity, and flexibility across some of the most important hubs throughout both regions. They’re also a part of an effort to align operations across the company’s divisions.
New Flights That Connect Key Asian and European Logistics and Hubs
In a recent press release, DHL announced that the company was expanding its air freight capacity with new weekly flights between Europe and Asia. The first new flight connects Shanghai and Leipzig, while the other connects Liege and Hong Kong.
These additional flights help to align DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Express and strengthen cross-business collaboration between the divisions, to provide better reliability, flexibility, and global reach across the supply chain.
The trade lanes between Europe and Asia are growing rapidly, and the new weekly Boeing 777F flights between these key hubs ensure the network can handle growing customer needs and demands. For example, the new flights should help to speed up deliveries, which is crucial as rapid delivery speeds become even more important to consumers.
Strengthening Air Flight Capacities
The choice to add additional flights to boost capacity in the regions centers around the company reinforcing its commitment to reliable, fast, and resilient shipments for customers. Plenty of thought went into deciding the destinations for these new flights, as well.
First, Leipzig was chosen due to being a major DHL Express aviation hub and the fact that it has a strong infrastructure for operational processing. It will serve as a key gateway for many of the shipments coming from Shanghai and help meet demand surges, especially during peak shopping seasons.
Next, the Liege-Hong Kong flight will include a stop in Tel Aviv, which will play a major role in supporting the market. This flight may also accommodate limited cargo loading or offloading when needed. Lastly, the return leg from Hong Kong will feed directly into DHL’s European distribution network.
Future Plans
In addition to this capacity boost in the European and Asian markets, DHL is also planning further enhancements across the company’s intercontinental air network and is committed to supporting global trade flows. Specifically, the press release mentions a transpacific uplift between Southeast Asia and the USA later into 2026.
These new flights are officially beginning at the start of the summer aviation schedule, which is the last Sunday in March. As they start happening, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them end up playing a major role in speeding up the reliability, speed, and efficiency of cross-border shipments between Asia and Europe.
As you could imagine, these new flights can bring great benefits for ecommerce companies that operate in the European and/or Asian markets, and allow them to meet the rising logistical demands that come with the increased popularity of ecommerce, especially cross-border ecommerce.
As ecommerce continues to grow, and as more and more packages are shipped internationally, new flight paths and capacity increases like this will be crucial to ensure that cross-border ecommerce can scale successfully and not be held back by supply chain holdups or other shipping-related issues.
