Amazon recently announced that the company is investing billions of dollars in Spain to boost data center infrastructure throughout Europe, and also drive AI innovation across the continent. This builds on Amazon’s existing investments in the area, and the move benefits a variety of different people, organizations, and groups.

Amazon is Investing Tens of Billions of Dollars in Spain to Expand Data Center Infrastructure

In a recent blog post, Amazon announced that the company is planning to invest nearly $40 billion (€33.7 billion) in Spain to expand and support data center infrastructure. This is primarily to deliver advanced AI and cloud computing to companies all across Europe, and the announcement adds €18 billion to the €15.7 billion investment already announced back in 2024.

This is the largest investment the company has ever made in Spain, and is the second multi-billion-dollar investment in the AI space in the last week for Amazon, as the company also invested $50 billion into OpenAI.

Amazon’s total planned investment is expected to add around  €31.7 billion to Spain’s total GDP through 2035.

Building on Years of Infrastructure Investment in the Region

While this is a new announcement, Amazon has been investing in Spain’s infrastructure for years. The company’s commitment to operating data centers in the country dates back to 2022, with the launch of the AWS Europe (Spain) Region.

This additional investment will help to support the increasing demand for cloud computing and AI throughout Europe, as well as increase AI adoption and help organizations and institutions of all sizes become more modern.

In addition to investing directly, Amazon has also made several other moves recently that benefit businesses throughout Europe, such as cutting seller fees to better compete with other ecommerce platforms operating in the area.

The Move Benefits a Variety of People and Organizations

This additional investment by Amazon is expected to provide a variety of benefits. First, it’s expected to support an estimated 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs. Of these jobs, 6,700 are full-time jobs from Amazon’s direct investment, including data center operations staff, construction workers, security personnel, and many others.

Amazon is also expected to build supply chain facilities in Aragón. When these are operational, these facilities are expected to create around 1,800 jobs in the region.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also trained more than 200,000 people in Spain since 2017 to develop digital skills, in an effort to empower them to advance their careers and participate in the digital transformation of Spain.

These infrastructure investments in Spain are also expected to benefit local communities, as Amazon intends to invest €30 million in community programs through 2035 in the areas where it operates. The investments will focus on areas like education, social impact, local development, and sustainability.

Speaking of sustainability,  Amazon is also committed to renewable energy to support this expanded infrastructure. In fact, the company is investing in 100 solar and wind projects across Spain to power operations, which includes seven new solar farms. Amazon is also committed to being water positive by 2030, and is supporting multiple water projects in Aragón.

Finally, this investment will also help businesses and organizations, as it’ll drastically expand data center infrastructure to let more companies across Europe take advantage of more advanced AI and cloud computing capabilities.
