Amazon, which has had an existing partnership with Anthropic since 2023, has announced that the pair of companies is expanding their relationship. This includes large financial commitments from each side, agreements to power and train AI models, and much more.
Amazon and Anthropic Deepen Existing Partnership
In a recent post, Amazon announced that it was expanding its strategic partnership with Anthropic. The existing partnership between the two companies dates back to 2023 and has focused on accelerating AI adoption across industries by making it easier for customers to build, deploy, and scale AI applications.
According to Amazon, more than 100,000 customers run Anthropic Claude models on Amazon Web Services (AWS), which makes it one of the most popular families of models on Amazon Bedrock.
Of course, Amazon is no stranger to AI outside of this partnership with Anthropic, as it has also partnered with OpenAI and recently released an AI-powered tool that helps sellers visualize their data.
Massive Financial Commitments by Both Companies
One of the biggest aspects of this expanded partnership is the large financial commitment that each company has made. Amazon has agreed to immediately inves $5 billion in Anthropic, and up to another $20 billion in the future, with these future investments being tied to certain milestones. This is in addition to the $8 billion that Amazon has already invested in Anthropic.
On the other side of things, Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on AWS technologies. This includes current and future generations of Trainium, which is Amazon’s custom silicon, and tens of millions of Graviton cores, which are Amazon’s widely adopted CPU chips.
Training and Powering AI Models
Outside of the financial commitments, another major component of this partnership is powering and training AI models. In fact, Anthropic will secure up to five gigawatts (GW) of capacity from Amazon to train and power the company’s advanced AI models.
This commitment includes Trainium 2, Trainium 3, Trainium 4, and the ability to purchase future generations of Trainium when they are released and become available. The collaboration also includes an expansion of international inference in both Asia and Europe to better serve the growing international user base that Claude has.
Making Anthropic’s Claude Available on AWS
Finally, this expanded partnership also lets AWS customers access the full Anthropic-native Claude console directly within AWS. This feature, Claude Platform on AWS, will let customers easily access the Claude platform through their existing AWS account, with no additional credentials, billing, or contracts to manage or deal with.
While customers can still use Claude on Amazon Bedrock if they prefer, this move simply gives customers more options for using Claude in the way that best meets their needs and preferences.
I believe this move, in general, makes plenty of sense for both Amazon and Anthropic. For Amazon, the company gets to offer a new way for customers to use and experience Claude, and also sell plenty of Trainium chips to help Anthropic train AI.
For Anthropic, the company gets access to massive computing power to train its AI models and gets to expand its market reach by Claude being directly accessible in AWS. Of course, both companies are also benefiting financially through investment and other financial commitments.
The move also looks to be a big win for the many businesses that use AWS, as it gives them easier and more streamlined access to one of the most popular AI platforms on the market.
