Following plenty of testing, Amazon has officially launched drone deliveries in the UK, making it only the second country in the world to offer the service to customers. This service lets certain UK residents receive small packages in under an hour, delivered right to their doorstep by a futuristic MK30 drone.
Amazon Makes First Drone Package Delivery in the UK
After the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved the delivery of small packages using uncrewed aerial vehicles back in January, Amazon has officially launched its same-day drone delivery service for select customers in the UK.
This move makes the UK the second country ever to offer the service, as the USA has had it in place since 2022, and is currently scaling drone delivery throughout the country.
While Amazon drone deliveries were supposed to begin in the UK back in 2023, a UK-wide regulatory framework being set up delayed the launch until now. Before officially launching the service, Amazon has been testing drones in the UK for several years.
In fact, Amazon first tested drones around the countryside near Cambridge, UK, around 10 years ago, but ultimately decided to end these plans as the CAA wasn’t making much progress to regulate drone deliveries in the UK at the time.
In addition to prioritizing drone delivery, Amazon has also acquired a startup to test delivery robots, showing that the company is always looking for new ways to innovate in the delivery space.
The Rules for Amazon Drone Delivery in the UK
Of course, not every package ordered on Amazon in the UK is eligible for drone delivery. Currently, UK drone deliveries from Amazon are only available in Darlington, Northeast England. This area was chosen due to its blend of rural and built-up residential areas, and because it’s also near major roads and an active airport.
Amazon believes that this type of environment was the perfect place to test and initially launch the service to see how drones interact in a variety of real-world conditions. Of course, the company will eventually target other areas of the UK to expand the service over time.
Drone deliveries in the area are available for shoe box-sized packages that weigh less than 5 lbs (2.2 kgs) and contain everyday items like beauty products, cables, bin liners, and other items. Also, these drones are only delivering within a 7.5-mile (12 km) radius of Amazon’s fulfillment center.
Once loaded onto the drone, these packages will be dropped onto customers’ driveways or gardens from about 10 feet (3 meters) up. Amazon aims to deliver these packages in under an hour, and once a delivery is made, the drone returns to its base station.
The deliveries are made using the MK30 drone, which Amazon developed in the USA over the last few years. Amazon aims to make around 10 flights an hour from its County Durham distribution center, and while the service is only available on a limited weekday basis to start, the company eventually plans to bump it up to 12 hours of daily flights, seven days a week.
While some people have said they’re opposed to the use of drones for deliveries in the area, mainly due to potential aircraft noise, Amazon has assured them that they’re designed to make minimal noise and give off no emissions.
The Benefits of Drone Delivery For Customers and Sellers Alike
While Amazon has recently done several things to improve the experience for UK customers and sellers on the platform, such as introducing Pay By Bank in the UK, the launch of this drone delivery service has the chance to be the most beneficial of them all.
For customers, drone deliveries get them their packages much quicker than traditional methods, for optimal convenience. This also makes them helpful for emergencies and urgent situations where standard delivery times won’t suffice. These deliveries are also emission-free, which is great for environmentally friendly consumers who want to keep their carbon footprints low.
For sellers, using drones for delivery can optimize efficiency and may cut down on last-mile delivery costs. Relying on drones also reduces the likelihood of human error during deliveries and can make it easier to deliver items to challenging environments with physical barriers like unpaved streets, steep hills, and narrow roads.
Using drones also contributes to reducing fuel emissions and helps brands better align themselves with consumers who take eco-friendliness seriously.
While drone delivery in the UK is still new and only available in a small area, as it expands and scales throughout the region, it has the potential to revolutionize delivery speed and convenience for ecommerce brands and consumers alike.
