PayPal just became more international-friendly, as it has added a collection of new local payment methods to better serve customers from around the world. Now, many international shoppers can pay using their favorite and most trusted methods, which helps merchants that sell globally deliver a better experience and enjoy more conversions.
PayPal Adds 30+ Local Payment Methods via New PPRO Partnership
Thanks to a new cooperation with PPRO, a fintech company that provides digital payment infrastructure, PayPal has expanded its global payments platform by adding over 30 new local payment methods to its list of supported methods.
Some of the newly supported payment methods on PayPal include:
- MB WAY in Portugal
- Swish in Sweden
- BLIK Pay Later in Poland
- Pix in Brazil
Speaking about the expansion, Samba Natarajan, the SVP and General Manager for Europe at PayPal, said that “even when consumers shop globally, they want to pay with the payment methods they know and trust at home. By expanding the local payment options available through PayPal, we are helping merchants reduce friction at checkout and reach more shoppers around the world.”
Customers from around the world are likely to love this change, as it lets them shop globally from overseas retailers, but not be forced to use payment methods they’re not comfortable with. Instead, they can gain access to all the same products from around the world, but pay in a way that they trust and have experience with.
The Move Helps Merchants With International Customers
This expansion is great news not only for international shoppers who can now use their favorite and most trusted payment methods on PayPal, but also for merchants with international customers.
First, the move may help merchants lower cart abandonment. If a consumer goes to buy a product, but sees that their favorite payment method isn’t supported, they may click away and look for a different seller that supports it.
Offering more payment methods for various global shoppers ensures a smoother and friction-free checkout experience. In turn, this may also lead to conversion rates increasing, as more people are completing their checkouts rather than leaving out of frustration.
Of course, merchants that support more payment methods also generally see more satisfied customers, which may keep them coming back as they know they can buy from you using payment methods they’re comfortable with. Similarly, offering more local payment methods provides trust to international shoppers and gives them peace of mind.
This expanded support also makes it easier for merchants to access emerging ecommerce markets without having to worry about dealing with complicated technical integration-related issues.
Our Take
Making Global Ecommerce More Accessible for Everyone
This cooperation between PayPal and PPRO makes cross-border ecommerce easier and more accessible for all parties, from the global brands selling products all over the world, to the international customers buying them.
The move also helps to overcome the credit card-only barrier that often exists among merchants, and lets emerging markets, which may often rely on digital wallets or local bank transfers, still buy from international merchants. It may also reduce fees, hidden currency conversions, and help transactions feel local and comfortable for everyone.
Also, with cross-border commerce set to explode, offering more payment methods will only help it continue to grow and flourish over time.
