Amazon Gets 360,000 “Is This Message Real?” Calls Per Year. Now It Built a Bot to Answer Them.

Amazon published a new feature today inside Alexa for Shopping that lets customers instantly verify whether a message, email, text, or phone call actually came from Amazon, by asking the AI to check against Amazon's own records of every communication it has ever sent. The tool produces one of three answers: confirmed from Amazon, not from Amazon, or unable to verify. Every verification query is automatically reported to Amazon's fraud team, feeding intelligence that helps identify and take down scam operations. It is the same Alexa for Shopping assistant we covered yesterday. It is now doing something that customer service teams spend 360,000 calls a year trying to do manually.

360,000 times per year, an Amazon customer contacts customer service with the same question: “Is this message from Amazon real?”

We covered the Shopify fake invoice scam this month, in which fraudsters create real Shopify stores and use Shopify’s own notification infrastructure to send fake receipts that look completely legitimate inside the Shop app.

We covered the Vinted new seller phishing scam, in which attackers create accounts with “vinted” in the username and send fake verification requests within minutes of a first listing. Both scams share the same underlying technique: use a trusted platform’s own systems or branding to create messages indistinguishable from legitimate ones.

Amazon faces the same problem at enormous scale. Scammers send fake Amazon delivery notifications, security alerts, refund offers, and Prime renewal notices. The consumer has no reliable way to check.

Until now.

How the Verification Tool Works

A customer who receives a suspicious message opens Alexa for Shopping and describes it. They can ask:

“Did Amazon send me a text about a delivery problem yesterday?” “Is this email about my Prime membership from Amazon real?” “Someone texted me from [phone number] about a package. Is that Amazon?” “I received a WhatsApp message saying my account is locked. Did Amazon send that?”

Alexa for Shopping checks those details against Amazon’s record of every communication it has sent, analysing sender information, content, timing, and formatting, and returns one of three responses within seconds.

If it is from Amazon: confirmed, with details of the message type, source, date, and time. If it is not from Amazon: a clear statement plus actionable next steps, check your orders in the app, contact Amazon directly through amazon.com/support, avoid clicking links or replying. If it cannot be confirmed: guidance on resubmitting with more specific information or using [email protected] as an alternative.

The Intelligence Loop That Makes This More Than Consumer Protection

The feature detail most coverage will underreport is the intelligence loop. When a customer asks Alexa for Shopping to verify a message, Amazon proactively reports it to its customer protection and enforcement team. Every report feeds the intelligence that helps identify emerging scam tactics, take down bad actors, and protect more customers.

A consumer who uses the tool to check a suspicious message is simultaneously reporting it to Amazon’s fraud team, whether or not they intended to. At 360,000 customer service calls per year just from the existing verification request volume, the intelligence yield from routing those queries through a system that automatically reports them is significant.

The scammer who sends 10,000 fake Amazon notifications generates 10,000 verification queries, each feeding the same database. The pattern becomes detectable in near-real-time.

The Broader Verification Infrastructure

The Alexa for Shopping tool is the third option Amazon has now deployed for message verification. Earlier this year, Amazon launched [email protected], an email address where suspicious messages can be forwarded, available to anyone worldwide regardless of whether they have an Amazon account. A dedicated verification form is also available through Amazon’s customer service pages.

The three-option approach is deliberate: different consumers will reach for different verification channels depending on where they are and what they are doing.

How Can This Help Me?

Amazon is using its AI assistant, the same Alexa for Shopping we covered yesterday for price tracking, Auto-Buy, and proactive shopping notifications, as the delivery mechanism for a trust and safety feature. The same interface that tells a consumer when their favourite brand releases a new product also tells them whether a message claiming to be from Amazon is real.

This is the integration that most platforms have not achieved: making the safety feature available through the same surface the consumer already uses for their primary commercial interaction, rather than routing them to a separate “report a scam” portal that most consumers never find.

For any ecommerce brand or marketplace operator thinking about how to address the scam problem, the Amazon model is worth studying. The Alexa for Shopping communication verification tool is a genuinely useful consumer protection feature, notable for the intelligence loop it creates: every verification query is also a fraud report, meaning the tool gets more effective the more it is used.

Amazon’s advantage is not that it has better fraud intelligence than other platforms. It is that it has built the verification tool into the surface consumers already use for their primary interaction, removing the friction that keeps most people from reporting suspicious messages at all.

The platform that routes safety features through convenience rather than reporting portals will win on fraud prevention. Amazon just demonstrated how.
