Driven by EVs, Online Shopping in South Korea Reaches New Peak

Driven by EVs, Online Shopping in South Korea Reaches New Peak

The ecommerce industry has reached new heights in South Korea, as online shopping hit a new record high in April 2026. While many types of products and purchases saw explosive growth over the last year, none were as remarkable as the increase in EV purchases among South Korean shoppers. In addition to online purchases rising, mobile shopping saw major growth.

While this growth should continue due to the friendly ecommerce market conditions in Asia, recent inflation increases may be one of the few things that can slow down the growth.

South Korean Online Shopping Reaches New All-Time High

Online shopping has been growing dramatically across the world, as more and more people are buying online to save time, get better deals, and get items they may not be able to find locally. This is especially true in South Korea, where the country’s online retail sales reached an all-new high in April 2026.

Internet shopping transactions reached over 24 trillion won (around $16 billion) during the month, which is a massive 10% increase over April of last year, and the highest April figure since the data began getting compiled back in 2017.

Even with the recent data breach that impacted many South Korean customers, online shoppers in the region clearly aren’t afraid of buying items digitally.

The Growth Was Largely Driven by EVs

The largest driver of this rapid growth was the online sale of cars and car accessories, with sales of Tesla EVs being especially strong. In fact, online car and car accessory sales jumped nearly 155% year-over-year.

But outside of the automotive sector, several other types of products also saw massive increases over the last year. The demand for mobile devices, cosmetics, and fashion items and accessories saw double-digit growth, while many other categories (such as food delivery, necessities, clothing, travel, appliances, and more) saw single-digit growth.

While the items people bought changed and evolved over the year, so did the ways they buy them. For example, shopping through smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices gained 8.6% over the last year, and shopping through these devices makes up 76.4% of total online shopping.

In addition to using these mobile devices to shop, many people in South Korea and other parts of the Asia Pacific region are using digital wallets to pay. In fact, digital wallets account for 77% of online spending and 62% of in-store spending in the Asia Pacific region.

Our Take

South Korea’s Ecommerce Growth Should Continue, But Inflation Could Slow It Slightly

The growth of ecommerce in South Korea, and many other parts of Asia, has been rapid over the past few months and years. The convenience-driven culture in Asia, as well as their busy lifestyles, high-density communities, and advanced infrastructure, make it a natural place for online shopping to flourish.

While April saw a new high for ecommerce in South Korea, don’t be surprised if the record continues to get broken over and over in the following months and years, as the industry likely continues to mature and grow even larger.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that this growth (or any growth, for that matter) isn’t guaranteed.

Recently, the South Korean Ministry of Data and Statistics revealed that the Consumer Price Index was 119.92 in May 2026, which is 0.5% higher than the previous month and 3.1% higher than May 2025, showing that inflation is certainly on the rise and people are paying more for things than they were last year.

As costs and inflation continue to rise, they have the chance to slow down this growth and keep the South Korean ecommerce market in check.
