The last few months have been anything but easy for American sellers on eBay as they try to keep up with the constant shipping rate changes being implemented by USPS. While many of the most recent changes have been increases, sellers should be happy to know that a decrease is finally here.
While the shipping rate decrease is only for select shipment types and in certain areas, it’s still good news for many eBay sellers. However, the constant rate changes that have taken place in recent months can also be incredibly annoying and frustrating for sellers at the same time.
Some USPS Rates on eBay Are Dropping
The eBay Seller News Team just made a new post that USPS is dropping shipping rates for two of its most popular shipments, which are Ground Advantage and Priority Mail. These rate adjustments go into effect on August 22nd, 2026. Some sellers may be surprised by these shipping rate decreases, especially as higher prices are driving growth for USPS.
For Ground Advantage, rates are decreasing for 2lb packages across Zones 1 to 8, and for Priority Mail, rates are decreasing for packages weighing up to 10lbs shipping to Zone 8.
However, the amount of the decrease wasn’t mentioned in the post, and it’s important to note that the rate decrease doesn’t apply to rural ZIP codes. eBay has said there’s nothing for sellers to do, as the eBay shipping calculator will automatically update with the new rates.
These changes come only a few months after USPS announced pricing increases for several products, including both Ground Advantage and Priority Mail. As for why USPS is decreasing rates, there’s been no official word yet.
Constant Rate Changes are Frustrating to Sellers
With shipping often being mentioned as an ecommerce pressure point, sellers are sure to welcome these lower prices with open arms. But at the same time, these constant rate changes are surely frustrating to ecommerce companies.
Back in late June, USPS had a surprise rate drop that lowered shipping rates for many Ground Advantage shipments. In July, USPS implemented broad rate increases, and followed that up with more rate increases on certain packages and zones in late July and early August.
As a result, over the past few months, USPS rates have decreased and increased on multiple different occasions. This often makes things incredibly tough for sellers to keep up with, especially when they’re often not given more than a couple of days’ notice before the changes are made.
While this most recent adjustment is a positive one for sellers, even positive changes still bring challenges. For example, companies wanting to pass on these shipping rate savings to their customers to gain a competitive advantage will need to put time and effort into updating their prices or listings.
Also, the uncertainty that comes from frequent rate increases and decreases makes it hard for brands to prepare for the future, accurately predict shipping expense budgets, and develop a long-term financial plan.
Our Take: Taking Control of Your Shipping
With shipping rates frequently increasing and decreasing, sellers need to take control of their shipping in any way they can. While these price changes being implemented by USPS, eBay, and other organizations will impact you, there are several other parts of your company’s shipping that you maintain control over.
Some ways to take control of your shipping amidst the ever-shifting USPS rates include using multi-carrier platforms to rate-shop, trimming down box dimensions, rounding up dimensions to avoid unexpected non-compliance fees, and distributing inventory near your biggest customer groups to shorten travel time and reduce costs.
While you’ll always be at the whim of USPS’s rate changes, the more you can do on your end to stabilize your shipping and make it more predictable, the better.
