Legacy Retailers Surrender To TikTok Shop As A Generation’s Shopping Habits Shift

Major retail chains including Ulta Beauty, Sephora, and Best Buy are rapidly expanding their footprint on TikTok Shop, validating the platform’s transition from a viral discovery engine to a mainstream checkout destination. However, this rush to capture Gen Z attention risks commoditizing brand equity in an algorithm-driven race to the bottom.

Legacy Retailers Surrender To TikTok Shop As A Generation's Shopping Habits Shift

The messaging from TikTok’s leadership is deliberate and unified. Ajay Salpekar, General Manager of beauty and food and beverage at TikTok Shop, recently stated that major retailers are joining the platform because they recognize that a generation’s shopping habits are being formed on TikTok Shop.

This rhetoric positions the platform not merely as an additional sales channel, but as the primary cultural incubator for future consumer behavior. By onboarding legacy giants like Ulta, which started selling via the platform in March, followed by Sephora and Best Buy, TikTok is successfully signaling to the broader market that social commerce has matured beyond independent, viral-only brands.

The GMV Gravity Well Forces Retailers’ Hands

Behind the cultural narrative lies a stark financial reality: the sheer volume of transactions on the platform is becoming impossible for traditional retailers to ignore.

Projections and mid-year data indicate that US TikTok Shop Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) has surged dramatically, with estimates placing H1 2026 US GMV at $11.8 billion, representing over 100 percent year-over-year growth. Other industry projections suggest the platform is on a trajectory to exceed $15 billion to $20 billion in US sales for the year.

For retailers accustomed to fighting for single-digit market share gains on Amazon or their own direct-to-consumer sites, this hyper-growth environment acts as a gravitational pull that is difficult to resist.

The Illusion Of Frictionless Customer Acquisition

Retailers justify their presence on TikTok Shop by citing general customer acquisition and the ability to incubate brands within the store ecosystem. However, this perspective often conflates impulse-driven discovery with genuine brand loyalty.

When a consumer purchases a product because a charismatic creator demonstrated it in a 30-second video, the primary loyalty is often to the creator or the platform’s algorithm, not the retailer facilitating the transaction.

Legacy brands risk subsidizing TikTok’s creator economy with steep affiliate commissions and platform fees, only to find that the lifetime value (LTV) of these algorithmically acquired customers is significantly lower than those acquired through traditional, intent-based search channels.

Operational Band-Aids Mask Structural Disconnects

The integration of legacy retail operations into TikTok’s chaotic, trend-driven environment is not seamless. For example, Best Buy’s recent launch on the platform heavily promotes that items are fulfilled by Best Buy with in-store returns.

While this attempts to bridge the trust gap and leverage existing physical infrastructure, it highlights the fundamental friction between TikTok’s frictionless, impulse-buy UX and the complex, high-consideration nature of electronics retail. Retailers are essentially building operational bridges to retrofit their traditional fulfillment models into a platform designed for ephemeral, low-consideration purchases.

Our Take

Run the Numbers Before You Join the TikTok Shop Rush

For ecommerce founders and brand operators, the migration of legacy retailers to TikTok Shop is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it validates the channel’s massive scale and normalizes social commerce for skeptical consumers.

On the other hand, it means the platform is becoming increasingly crowded and expensive. Competing for attention alongside Best Buy and Sephora requires a level of creative output and affiliate management that strains the resources of most independent brands. Before diving in, operators must rigorously stress-test their unit economics.

If your margin cannot withstand the combined weight of platform fees, creator commissions, and high return rates, you are not building a sustainable business on TikTok Shop; you are merely funding its growth.
