eBay is offering a zero selling fee promotion to select sellers throughout the month of March, in several popular categories like Clothing, Baby, Home Decor, and Jewelry & Watches. Only those invited to the promo can take advantage of it, and there’s a chance the promotion was done in response to Vinted recently coming to the USA.
eBay Offers Zero Selling Fee Promo
Between March 3rd and 31st, eBay is offering a zero selling fee promotion to select sellers in the USA. The promotion is for up to 25 items and is limited to the Baby, Home Decor, Jewelry & Watches, and Clothing, Shoes & Accessories categories.
The promotion is invite-only, but it’s not immediately clear how eBay is choosing which sellers to offer the promotion to.
The Details of the Promotion
According to the terms and conditions of the promotion, it’s only available to sellers invited by eBay or one of its partners. The seller’s country of residence on eBay also needs to be the USA to be eligible for the promotion.
The first 25 items sold in the qualifying categories during the duration of the promo will receive a 100% Final Value Fee discount. However, sellers need to keep in mind that other fees like international fees, insertion fees, and optional listing upgrade fees aren’t eligible for the promotion.
The promotion applies to both auction and Buy It Now sales, but be aware that an item must be sold and paid for before the end of the promotional period to be eligible. For example, if you sell an item within March, but the buyer doesn’t pay until early April, that sale won’t be eligible for the promotion.
The URL for the promo, as well as some of the copy in the invite message, references New York City, but nothing in the terms and conditions says that the promo is only for those in New York.
The Potential Motive for the Promo
According to some comments in a conversation among sellers on the eBay forums about the promo, the motive for the promotion may be the recent introduction of Vinted into the American market, beginning with New York.
For those unfamiliar, Vinted is an online marketplace for buying and selling second-hand fashion items, and is the leading platform of its kind in Europe. It doesn’t charge a selling fee, which could have eBay worried that it’ll take some of its market share in the USA as it becomes more well-known and popular.
Vinted coming to New York City first may explain why the copy and URL of eBay’s new promo seem to target New York sellers in particular, as it aims to keep sellers here on eBay. This promo could also be a small test by the company before rolling out fee-free sales on a greater scale in an effort to better compete with Vinted, but there’s no evidence of this being the case.
Whether or not the move was done in response to the news of Vinted coming to New York or not, sellers who have received an invitation might as well take advantage of the deal.
While eBay has long been a popular place to sell, sellers should always make sure to evaluate their options when deciding where to sell their items. New platforms are frequently coming out or expanding to new areas, and some may be worth considering, depending on how they work, as well as your specific needs and preferences.
