In an effort to simplify and speed up the returns process, as well as gain a competitive edge over its peers, UPS, through its subsidiary Happy Returns, has signed an exclusive deal with TikTok Shop to provide box-free and label-free returns.
The move offers several advantages for U.S. buyers and sellers on TikTok Shop, is available at thousands of “return bars” across several physical retail locations, and is open to TikTok Shop sellers who manage their own fulfillment or rely on TikTok Shop for it.
UPS and TikTok Shop Collaborate on Label-Free Returns
UPS and TikTok Shop just announced an exclusive deal to offer box-free and label-free returns to the growing TikTok Shop network throughout the USA. These returns are made through Happy Returns, a UPS subsidiary, and the service is available to all participating sellers, whether they handle their own fulfillment or use the platform’s logistics.
Shoppers can take their returns to any one of Happy Returns’ near-10,000 “return bars”, which are located inside of Staples, Ulta Beauty, and UPS stores. The items don’t need to be boxed or labeled before being returned, and once they’re returned, the items are scanned, bagged, labeled, and combined into larger boxes and sent to processing hubs daily.
Speaking about the agreement, TikTok Shop’s president of strategic initiatives, Patrick Nommensen, said that “Our collaboration with Happy Returns builds on our commitment to making the returns experience faster, hassle free, and more trustworthy for our shoppers”.
The Key Benefits for Sellers
This new deal brings plenty of advantages for sellers. First, it helps them reduce return fraud, which is becoming a major concern and struggle for sellers. Happy Returns uses an AI-powered tool to seek out fraudulent returns by flagging suspicious packages, analyzing what’s in them, and sending them for an audit by humans who will verify the fraud and withhold the refund.
The agreement also helps companies improve inventory turnaround times, saves them time and money, and doesn’t force them to change up or migrate their supply chains. It also helps companies offer a straightforward and high-quality returns experience that boosts loyalty and retention, rather than a frustrating one that drives customers away.
Several Advantages for Buyers Too
TikTok Shop buyers also get plenty of benefits. First, the partnership opens up an incredibly convenient way for online shoppers to return things they don’t want, without having to print labels, buy packaging tape and boxes, and physically box up the items on their own.
Because the service is available at thousands of locations, many shoppers won’t need to travel far to find a place to drop off their returns. Customers may also feel more confident and trusting when using a solution like this, as it involves physically handing off the item to a worker who securely scans and packages it.
Traditionally, when sending a returned item back to a retailer, there’s a security gap between when you let go of the item and when the carrier scans it. If the item is stolen or lost in this period, there may be no proof the shopper actually sent it back, which could lead to a refund not being issued.
Our Take
UPS Gains a Massive Competitive Edge
In addition to helping sellers and shoppers on TikTok Shop, it also helps UPS. By signing an exclusive deal, competitors like FedEx and USPS are locked out of working with the fast-growing TikTok Shop on its return flow. The move also helps UPS compete with Amazon, which also recently expanded its box-free and label-free return options.
It also lets UPS improve its margins by focusing on lucrative “reverse logistics” services, as handling returns often comes with better margins for carriers than simply dealing with deliveries. The exclusive aspect of this deal also blocks other carriers from accessing this revenue stream with TikTok Shop as well.
The new deal also has the potential to bring in thousands of TikTok Shop customers into physical retail locations associated with UPS, drastically increasing retail foot traffic and possibly boosting sales.
