Google’s Universal Cart Has Officially Launched in the USA

A few months after announcing and unveiling it, Google has officially launched Universal Cart in the USA. The tool aims to make shopping through Google easier and more streamlined than ever, and also help consumers keep track of pricing, discounts, deals, and availability.

But in addition to changing ecommerce for shoppers, the tool also has a major impact on sellers, as it changes discovery, alters how and when brands need to reach consumers, and makes data quality non-negotiable.

Universal Cart Launches in the USA

Google has just launched Universal Cart, an AI-powered shopping tool, in the USA. Universal Cart, which was first unveiled a few months ago, is both an intelligent shopping cart and a new hub for consumers who shop on Google.

It helps bring together products from different ecommerce sites and platforms into one place, making it easier than ever for consumers to keep track of their items, monitor prices and discounts, and more.

The overall idea is to make online shopping easier to manage and stop you from having to constantly hunt down the same items or start your entire search over from scratch. Google said it was also built to mirror how people actually shop today across the platform, and that it aims to give shoppers more confidence and control.

The Cart Helps Shoppers in a Variety of Ways

Google outlined some of the many ways that Universal Cart can help shoppers improve their experience.

First, it serves as a more convenient and organized way to keep track of the things you’re thinking about buying. Instead of keeping dozens of tabs open to different stores and pages, you can keep them all in your cart, even if they’re from different brands and sites. It also saves your progress over time, so you can come back later and not lose any of the items.

Next, because the tool is built on the refreshed product listings in Google’s Shopping Graph, it can constantly keep you updated about pricing or inventory changes relating to the items in your cart.

It also identifies hidden savings, both by showing you relevant promo codes in the cart or even helping you choose which payment method to use based on the perks and rewards you may earn.

Finally, it makes checking out seamless, as you can often choose to either check out with Google Pay right in the cart, or transfer your items to the merchant’s cart to finish the purchase on their site.

The Launch Has a Major Impact on Ecommerce Brands

While this new tool is aimed at helping shoppers have a better experience in terms of control, convenience, and organization, it also has a major impact on ecommerce brands.

First, it bypasses the traditional website visit, as consumers can not only learn about your product without ever visiting your site thanks to AI, but now even build a cart and potentially check out right in Google. While you’re still the seller, it’s certainly a change to how customers interact with your brand.

This alters product discovery and could negatively impact companies that rely on people visiting their homepage or website to learn about branding, connect with product messaging, or view upsell opportunities.

Also, pre-cart persuasion is more important than ever, as transactions can happen in as little as a few seconds, without the buyer ever leaving Google’s interface. There’s no more guaranteed multi-step checkout or funnel for you to upsell, display trust badges, or differentiate your offering.

Instead, you need to rely on things like great photos and videos, transparent pricing, social proof, and quick bullets or sentences to clearly communicate your value in seconds. Gaining immediate trust and providing instant clarity about your items are crucial as checkout friction continues to drop.

Our Take

Great Data Quality is Non-Negotiable

Because the Universal Cart pulls real-time data from Google Merchant Center feeds, brands need to ensure their data is clean and updated to find success with the tool. This goes for product data and attributes, pricing information, and inventory availability.

If your items have stale pricing, missing photos, incomplete details, or outdated specs, you risk them being completely excluded from Universal Cart. As a result, you need to be quick to update your data when things change and frequently monitor your Merchant Center feed.
