In isolation, the product video upload feature is a minor Merchant Center improvement. In the context of what EcomWatch has been covering this month about AI-driven product discovery, it is more significant.
We covered the Shopify Q2 data showing AI-driven orders tripling year-over-year, with Shopify crediting richer structured product data as the mechanism by which AI agents match products to buyer intent. We covered the ReFiBuy AI Commerce Rankings showing that brands ranked 722nd and 814th in traditional web sales were winning AI-driven commerce because their product data was richer than the giants ranked above them. We also covered Google’s UCP co-development with Shopify showing that AI agent compatibility is becoming infrastructure rather than a feature.
All of those stories point to the same underlying principle: the merchant with the richest, most complete, most multi-dimensional product data wins AI-driven discovery. Static images describe a product in two dimensions. A video describes it in four: shape, texture, movement, and context.
The Shopify AI Search Connection
When a buyer asks an AI assistant for “a car seat that fits three across a sedan,” traditional keyword search returns whatever ranks highest for “car seat.” An AI agent that can see a product video demonstrating how the seat installs in a specific vehicle type, shows its dimensions in the context of a back seat, and demonstrates three seats fitting side by side, can answer that specific query with the specific product that fits.
Video is the data format that closes the gap between what a product actually is and what a text description and static image can convey. That gap is where return rates live, where customer satisfaction failures happen, and where the AI agent that has better product data wins over the one that does not.
The Practical Specifications
Minimum video length: 6 seconds. Maximum: 240 seconds (4 minutes). Minimum resolution: 720p. Accepted aspect ratios: 9:16 (vertical), 16:9 (horizontal), and 1:1 (square). Maximum file size: 500MB per video. Videos must not be low resolution, blurry, or out of focus.
The aspect ratio flexibility means that video content produced for TikTok Shop, YouTube Shorts, or Instagram Reels in vertical format can be uploaded directly to Merchant Center without re-editing. Brands that already produce social video have the raw material for this feature available today.
The Q4 Window That Makes October the Right Time to Act
Google’s product video feature arrives six weeks before October, when the eBay holiday playbook data shows 57% of holiday shoppers begin active purchasing, when Amazon FBA holiday fees begin on October 15, and when AI-driven shopping traffic is already running at 62% growth year-over-year.
Brands that add product videos to their Merchant Center listings in September will have those videos indexed and available for the full peak shopping window. Brands that add them in November will be competing with richer product data than they had, but later than they could have.
Our Take
Your Competitors Have Not Added Their Videos Yet. That Window Will Not Stay Open.
The Google Merchant Center product video feature is a small addition to a large platform.
What makes it worth prioritising in September rather than treating as a nice-to-have is the specific context in which it arrives: a Google shopping ecosystem increasingly powered by AI agents that need multi-dimensional product data, a peak season window where AI-driven traffic is growing at 62% year-over-year, and a competitive landscape where the brands with the richest product data in Merchant Center are winning AI-driven discovery against brands with higher web sales rankings but thinner product data.
The merchants who should act on this first are the ones in categories where video demonstrably closes the gap between what a static image shows and what a customer needs to see to be confident in the purchase: fashion, footwear, home goods, sporting equipment, and anything where fit, texture, or function cannot be fully conveyed in a photograph.
